A museum is an institution that collects, researches, and puts cultural objects on display for the public to enjoy and is a place of learning. Its traditional outreach efforts are often based around programs and exhibitions that can bring more visitors to the museum. Even before the onset of Covid-19 global pandemic, museums faced the problems of sustaining public interest with their collections. One way to keep the museum relevant in an increasingly digital world is to make their collections digital. The Covid-19 global pandemic has helped to raise more awareness on the use of technology to help keep museums operating. It is, however, one thing to digitize a museum’s collection and put it online, will that be enough able to recreate, or even take the place, of a museum-visiting experience? This chapter will examine the issues and challenges of museums going digital with their collections. The real challenge is perhaps creating a digital space like a type of a virtual gallery or virtual museum that applied VR and AR technologies and that can offer a unique level of engagement to virtual visitors.
