Ergonomics Challenges for Elder Women Involved in Waste Collection: A Study in Jabalpur, India
摘要
This study presents ergonomic challenges faced by elder women handcart-pulling waste collector workers of municipal corporations, particularly those utilizing moving hand carts. This study aims to identify the Manual materials handling (MMH) related muscular discomfort responsible for the development and prevalence of Musculoskeletal disorders MSDs in existing working conditions. This study used Postural (RULA, REBA & OWAS), Modified Dutch Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Body Part discomfort (BPD) study to identify the postural discomfort, nature of work and associated ergonomic risk factors in the existing workplace. It revealed that the nature of work involves highly repetitive and force exertion, resulting development of posture-related MSDs among women workers. The highest discomfort was reported in various body parts, which include hand, forearm, wrist, knees, and feet. This study recognizes the contribution of women to waste management and wishes to contribute to the larger goal of creating a safer working environment for elder women workers, where ergonomics intervention will help to reduce the risk of WRMSDs and improve their workability.
