Beggary and unemployment are critical issues faced by developing nations such as India. The present paper discusses creation of a new ecosystem for the unemployed people by applying altruism as a core principle. India is also home to multitude of languishing arts and crafts that provide huge potential to convert micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into a functional, self-sufficient, sustainable unit in the existing market. The paper intends to discuss and present a conceived idea about merging issues with potential craft businesses into one ecosystem of values in design where a balance is sought between hedonism and ascetism, technology, and cognitive requirements of the system. The ecosystem is being as termed as SWAYAM meaning ‘self’ in Sanskrit, aims at generating employment and promoting Indian crafts in a sustainable donation-based model which is a culmination of design practices of graphic, product, user experiences, apparel, accessories, packaging design initiatives, and design management as a practice. The present paper discusses the staffing and employment opportunity generated by the system, the crafts that are planned to be practiced in the community (block prints, painting, terracotta, back strap weaving, durry weaving, basketry, embroideries, papier mache, puppetry, stone, and wood work), the sustainable approach (life cycle assessment, carbon footprint assessment, cradle to cradle approach, and 3Rs), the business model for finance management, retail management, and the philosophy of the system. From graphic design perspective, pro-active branding and advertising methods will be employed. Organization of craft bazaars via Handicrafts and Handlooms Export Corporation of India (HHEC), Handloom Export Promotion Council of India (HEPC), and Ministry of Textiles and Rural Development will be planned for wide publicity and offline retail. Whereas online retail and advertising strategies will be employed for sale within and outside of India. The ecosystem aims at becoming an ideal in sustainable practices, employment generation, and altruism for preserving traditional arts and crafts of the country and becoming a forerunner in MSME segment.

摘要
