In recent years, the concept of smart energy systems is essential for economic and energy-efficient renewable energy management. Smart energy system focuses primarily on the integration of multiple energy sectors and allows for the establishment of a holistic and improved solution for a feasible, affordable, renewable system of sustainable energy in the coming days. Even though many experiments have been conducted to optimize smart energy systems, the design and management of these systems still remain a challenge for researchers. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to study the definitions, compositions and operations of smart energy systems to establish a complete understanding of these systems as well as recognizing the advantages and challenges faced by these systems. Moreover, this chapter encompasses the various operation optimizations of smart energy systems to improve the subsystems’ performance without dropping their performance. A comparison of the smart energy system with the smart grid is also discussed. Different objectives, algorithms and models will be addressed to get an improved design for better performance of the smart energy system. Applications for the development of future smart energy systems will also be reported.
