Smart Stick Assistant for Visually Impaired People

The existing solutions for the visually impaired (VI) include usage of guide dogs, walking sticks and devices for obstacle detection. The devices detect the obstacle and inform the user about the location of the obstacle via audio or vibration. The walking sticks and devices using hats, belts, etc. are the extra items that the VI Person need to carry while going out. Also, these aids do not detect the object type i.e. if it is any animal, human or any object and if object then what object it is. The problems such as having to carry extra items for aid, no object identification, etc. Should be eliminated and the VI should be able to walk around like any other normal person. The proposed system provides smart assistant to the visually impaired people through stick. The main objectives of the proposed systems are: 1. To design and develop a “Smart Stick for VI people”. 2. To help visually impaired people in navigation. 3. To design a system which will recognize the obstacles in the route of VI person The system identified the obstacles/objects which comes in front of the VI people. Also identify object types as well as number of objects. Authors used object detection algorithm.
