Hands-On Approach: A Novel Treatment for Autistic Children
摘要
This chapter introduces autism spectrum disorder which is characterized by difficulties in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing challenges. Traditional therapeutic interventions often focus on behavioral modification and skill development but may overlook the critical role of sensory integration. The hands-on approach emphasizes the use of tactile, sensory-based activities to address these unique sensory needs. By incorporating deep pressure techniques, guided touch, and interactive sensory activities, this approach aims to improve sensory processing and reduce anxiety, thereby enhancing social interaction and emotional regulation. The approach is individualized, allowing therapists to tailor interventions based on each person’s sensory profile and preferences. Preliminary studies highlighted in this chapter indicate that the hands-on approach can significantly improve sensory processing abilities, reduce anxiety, and increase social engagement among individuals with ASD. The chapter further explores the theoretical foundations of this approach, its practical application, and the initial evidence supporting its effectiveness, by focusing on sensory integration, aiming to improve therapeutic outcomes and the quality of life for those on the autism spectrum.
