ChatGPT is a conversational artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI that has transformed human–computer interaction. Although it has advanced capabilities, still the gap between user expectations and the artificial intelligence system’s ability is wide. It serves as a foundation upon which to systematically investigate and analyze this gap and users’ expectations to provide practical insights on developing the next generation of conversational AI systems. Qualitative research was employed to analyze the data that collected from the users of ChatGPT through thematic analysis. For this research online survey data collected from 371 participants and analyzed via NVIVO software, employing Braun and Clarke’s six-step thematic analysis approach. Based on the above thematic analysis, the following were users’ expectations of the next version of ChatGPT: Accuracy, multimedia, automation, better explanation, and support for various language and safety. Great prompts, logic, advanced, and brainstorming had been mentioned to ensure an efficient ChatGPT. This research offers a well-reasoned framework that will provide a guideline of the development of the next version of ChatGPT. Topics on accuracy, multimedia, automation, and ethics will ensure that developers build an AI chat that is friendlier and beneficial to users globally.
