The contamination of environments with heavy metals is of particular concern for children’s health, given that many of these are neurotoxic and their effects on the brain can be permanent. Lead for example was widely used as a paint ingredient, a gasoline additive, and a solder and water pipe component, and although new uses of lead in these products was eliminated roughly 40 years ago, lead contamination from these legacy sources is widespread in soil, dust, homes, and water supplies, poisoning a latent risk for children. The discovery of metals, including lead but also arsenic, cadmium and mercury, in baby foods has raised a general concern about metals in the food supply. A careful analysis of relative exposures, however, indicate that the general legacy environmental sources drive population level blood lead concentrations, and that food products are likely a negligible component of a child’s overall lead exposure. Although a similar dataset of children’s exposure to metals other than lead is not available, it is reasonable to assume that general environmental sources similarly dominate net exposure.
