This chapter presents five premises that serve as the foundations for this book. Then, the discussion ventures outside TS, dwelling on norms of language and their social utility through the voice of Bartsch (1987). From this first review, the conversation calls forth Toury (1980; 1995; 2015) and other relevant thinkers contributing to translation norms. This framework paved the way for the ‘descriptive turn’, a consequential conceptual and analytical development in TS. As a first example, revisiting part of Toury’s famous Shlonsky-analysis (2015, p. 226) shows that there may still be knots to disentangle between norms and constraints in TS. Let us start laying the foundational premises through an overview of OT.

摘要
