Blockchain’s Role in Facilitating the Transition to a Circular Economy

This research paper explores the potential of blockchain technology in accelerating the transition to a circular economy, with a focus on energy consumption and environmental challenges linked to Bitcoin mining. While blockchain is often criticized for its energy-intensive processes, particularly in cryptocurrency validation, it also offers significant potential for enhancing transparency, trust, and identity verification across industries. The aim of the paper is to examine the relationship between blockchain energy consumption and global energy demands, emphasizing Bitcoin's environmental footprint and the role of renewable energy in mitigating its impact. Using data from the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) and regression analysis, the study identifies a strong correlation between Bitcoin consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The findings highlight the importance of integrating sustainable practices, renewable energy, and technological advancements to reduce blockchain’s environmental impact and support the shift toward a circular economy.
