After a seminar at the University of Massachusetts in March 2012, I returned home with a head full of thoughts on the impact of the seven generations of Iroquois and a desire to know more. The first book I acquired there was Grinde and Johansen’s Exemplar of Liberty: Native America and the Evolution of Democracy (1991), however, nowhere in the book was there any mention of the “Seven Generations.” Although the story of the seven Iroquois generations is all over the Internet, I didn’t come across a website that provided the source of this information. No matter how much I searched the literature, I couldn’t find it.
