Digital Technologies in Offsite Construction Carbon Emissions: A Systematic Literature Review

Digital technologies have started to be incorporated into the Offsite Construction (OSC) Carbon Emissions (CEs), instigating an interdisciplinary initiative to comprehend and enhance the industry. This systematic literature review aims to review the application of digital technology in OSC CE, including 1) the sources of OSC construction CE; 2) How digital technology measures CE; and 3) How digital technology monitors CE. The review reveals two primary types of digital technology applications in OSC CEs, namely CE estimation in the design phase using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and real-time monitoring of CE from manufacturing to construction using the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-physical Systems (CPS). This research offers insights into OSC CEs from carbon data acquisition, data processing, and data visualization, encompassing OSC material production, component production, component transportation, and onsite assembly. It also identifies the obstacles to implementing digital technology applications in OSC CEs and proposes potential directions for future research. This paper provides an overview of the practices and applications of digital technology for OSC CE, paving the way for future advancements in the field.
