A Conceptual Framework of Optimized Office Floor Plan Generation Based on Space Utilization Prediction

Space-use analysis (SUA) is crucial for architects aiming to refine architectural designs considering the space utilization of various building spaces. This study explores the less investigated territory of office building design, with a focus on space utilization, addressing the challenge of imbalanced space utilization, where some areas are underutilized while others are excessively utilized. Such imbalance leads to inefficiencies in sustainability, economic performance, communication, and workplace productivity. These issues can be solved by an optimized floor plan design with a balanced space utilization. Our research methodology included a literature review to identify key factors influencing space utilization in office buildings and to explore quantitative methods for its assessment. Following establishing a space utilization prediction procedure, we proposed a conceptual framework that integrates space utilization prediction into the architectural design process. This framework automatically calculates each space type's required number and area, along with its optimal utilization. The proposed framework allows for the immediate generation of office floor plan alternatives in response to user and spatial input changes, ensuring optimal space utilization and tailoring it to specific user needs. This method aids architects in achieving maximum space utilization efficiency, meeting the criteria for sustainable, economically viable, and productive office environments. Our contribution to the architectural field is a conceptual framework for integrating space utilization into the design, promoting balanced and efficient use of office spaces.
