In the realm of construction, facilities management (FM) often plays catch-up to its more established counterparts like architecture and engineering. However, the advent of digital twins presents a transformative opportunity for the integration of digital twins into FM practices, leveraging existing technologies while addressing current gaps. Through literature review based on international studies but more specifically in Germany and Norway, we investigate the motivations behind embracing digital twins and the challenges associated with their implementation. Our findings reveal digital twins is a versatile concept, but should be considered more in the context of FM when developing digital twins for FM as well as within the value of current systems used in FM. There is widespread recognition of potential value of digital twins which is contingent upon thoughtful integration with existing and emerging technologies. This study sheds light on the evolving landscape of FM digitalization and offers insights for practitioners seeking to leverage digital twins in their operations and management strategies.
