The recent COVID-19 pandemic has brought the issue of mental health and suicide to the forefront; indeed, experts have described it as a ‘perfect storm’, implying the role of the pandemic in driving suicidal behaviours. However, an association between the two is neither novel nor unfounded. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the historical trends in the relationship between viral disease outbreaks and suicide rates, pandemic-related risk factors that may drive suicide risk, impact on special populations, and prevention strategies. Finally, we end with a discussion on challenges in suicide research during pandemics. It is hoped that the chapter will provide useful insights for informing practice, policy, and preparedness to handle suicide and mental health, more broadly, during future viral disease outbreaks.

摘要
