It is well known that suicide is one of the world’s leading causes of death. Globally, the WHO’s age-standardized 2019 suicide estimates show that the African region has the highest suicide rate at 11.2 per 100,000 population, followed by European region at 10.5 per 100,000 population. Prioritizing and designing targeted suicide prevention interventions and policies requires an understanding of the risk factors for suicidal behaviour. Socioeconomic conditions play a significant role in suicide. People who are economically disadvantaged, for instance in financial hardship and unemployment, are often more likely to attempt suicide, as suicide rates are higher in these groups. Suicide rates seem to decline with macro-policy interventions by governments to alleviate financial stress.
