Understanding the Nuances and Mitigation Measures of Plant Invasion: A Step Towards Sustainable Development

Plant invasion refers to the proliferation of non-native plant species that exert a profound impact on native communities upon intentional or unintentional introduction into novel regions. This phenomenon constitutes a crucial aspect of global change, standing as the second leading cause of biodiversity loss, second only to the exploitation of biological resources. Nonetheless, the mechanisms underlying how invasive plants infiltrate intricate natural plant communities remain elusive, warranting considerable attention in ecology research. While there is no general explanation for why plant invasions occur, emerging concepts challenge preconceived notions surrounding invasive species. Some introduced species have initially aided conservation efforts but later exhibited detrimental effects on the survival and reproduction of other species. To shed light on the intricate dynamics of plant invasions, this review paper presents a comprehensive overview of theories concerning the mechanisms and processes involved, factors contributing to the spread of non-native plant species, their impacts on native ecosystems and management strategies proposed to mitigate their impacts. The insights offered in this review are drawn from a selection of random research studies spanning from 1995 to 2022, providing valuable perspectives on the complexities of plant invasions. Additionally, the paper highlights geographical biases inherent in the study of plant invasions, advocating for a more holistic ecological context in future research. Overall, a deeper comprehension of plant invasions is imperative to effectively manage and mitigate their ecological consequences. By embracing a multifaceted approach, scientists can more accurately assess the interplay between invasive and native plant species, facilitating the development of effective conservation strategies to safeguard global biodiversity.
