This study investigates the factors influencing the adoption of the school admission e-Government platform in the Western Cape of South Africa. The motivation for conducting this study is that the number of rolled-out e-Government platforms in the Western Cape has increased sharply due to the accelerated implementation of the Digital Government Strategy during COVID-19 to ensure that the government was able to deliver services during the pandemic. However, South Africa’s rank in the international E-Participation index has been declining so the constituents’ use of e-Government platforms can be seen as a challenge. Data was collected from 218 users of the school admission platform through an online survey. This study employs the Government Acceptance Model (GAM) to explore factors influencing the adoption of the school admission e-Government platform in the Western Cape province, South Africa. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was used for analysis. The results suggest that perceived awareness, perceived information quality and perceived trust are the key factors that influence people to adopt e-Government platforms. Perceived trust itself was further found to be influenced mainly by perceived security and perceived uncertainty. These factors are quite different from traditional technology adoption factors. Our findings aim to help governments better understand the factors influencing e-Government adoption to increase adoption levels and participation for citizens.
