Learning Sciences and Learning Enhancement: Asian Perspectives—Overview

This overview chapter synthesizes the development of the learning sciences across selected Asian contexts, including Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines, and East Asia’s assessment reform landscape. It presents the learning sciences in Asia not as a single trajectory but as a diverse regional formation shaped by policy priorities, university-led research, technological innovation, cultural traditions, and infrastructural conditions. Across the cases, the chapter identifies common themes: the use of technology to support learning sciences principles, the localization of global frameworks such as knowledge building and computer-supported collaborative learning, the continuing influence of examination cultures, and the importance of equity and capacity-building. The chapter argues that Asia is advancing the learning sciences by adapting global ideas to local contexts while also generating new theories, methods, and technologies with wider relevance for the field. It concludes by highlighting the need for stronger regional collaboration to shape the future global agenda of the learning sciences.
