Imaging of HCC

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant primary hepatic tumor. It develops in cirrhotic liver. HCC generally presents late in the disease process and as a result the associated mortality is relatively high, with sources estimating it to be the third or fourth most common cause of death due to cancer worldwide. Imaging is the cornerstone for diagnosis of HCC. Screening is usually performed by using ultrasound examination. Ultrasonography surveillance for early detection of HCC improves survival in a cost-effective way and is endorsed by major practice guidelines. If imaging criteria is suggestive for HCC diagnosis, biopsy could be avoided. Multiple imaging modalities are available for assessing HCC at different stages either screening, diagnosis, staging and post-treatment evaluation. Diagnosis and staging are usually performed by cross-sectional imaging either CT or MRI. Sometimes PET-CT imaging could be used in initial staging especially prior to liver transplantation. Multiple imaging methods are also utilized for the evaluation of treatment response either after local regional treatment or systemic therapy.
