Climate-Proofing Tomatoes: Molecular Strategies for Adapting to Changing Climate
摘要
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), a critical member of the Solanaceae family, holds substantial nutritional and economic significance worldwide. This chapter delves into the global challenges posed by climate change on tomato cultivation, emphasizing its impact on yield, quality, and geographical distribution. Elevated temperatures, drought, salinity, flooding, and disease pressures significantly hinder tomato production, exacerbated by shifting climate patterns. The primary objective is to explore molecular strategies for enhancing tomato resilience to these stresses. Advanced biotechnological approaches, including genetic engineering, CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and marker-assisted breeding, are highlighted for their potential to climate-proof tomatoes. By overexpressing heat shock proteins, manipulating abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathways, and improving osmoprotectant biosynthesis, these strategies aim to bolster stress tolerance in tomatoes. The integration of multi-omics approaches and synthetic biology further enhances the understanding and development of stress-resilient tomato varieties. Addressing the socioeconomic and ethical considerations of GMOs is crucial for public acceptance and regulatory compliance. This comprehensive review underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing sustainable tomato production, ensuring global food security amid the challenges of climate change.
