Urban areas worldwide face increasing challenges related to environmental sustainability, public health, and community well-being. In many urban areas, the rapid urbanization and fast economic development have led to air pollution, traffic congestion, and the loss of green spaces. Literature shows that urban regeneration can play a crucial role in mitigating climate change impacts and providing adaptation plans for the local communities. In particular, open and green areas planned to create blue-green infrastructure systems provide important contributions in terms of ecological, economic, social, sociocultural, psychological, and aesthetic aspects. This study considers the potentialities and benefits of these natural infrastructures in urban regeneration, supporting the development of an innovative framework to be applied to the city of Istanbul. In particular, this study explores the potential alternative uses for gas stations and how they could be repurposed in line with the principles of acupuncture urban planning for urban regeneration. It proposes a comprehensive methodology, based on key performance indicators (KPIs) and robust approaches such as SN tool and GIS-based impact assessment to address these challenges by transforming underutilized gas station sites into green spaces that enhance the urban landscape, improve environmental quality, and promote community resilience. This methodology is applied to a district of Istanbul city, highlighting the potential benefits deriving from greening urban spaces to address the pressing challenges of urbanization and climate change.
