Effect of Potassium Salt Variation and Ion Exchange Temperature on Annealed Soda Lime Silica Glass

Ion exchange is one of the strengthening methods that can be used to improve the mechanical and structural properties of soda lime silica glass. Ex- changing smaller sodium ions from glass with larger potassium ions from the salt medium introduce compressive stress on the glass surface. Different types of potassium salts, KNO3, KCl and K2SO4 with varying temperature of treatment were used to identify their effect on glass properties. The effectiveness of using the salt paste method instead of the common salt bath technique was determined. In this study, the glass samples were first annealed at 600 ºC and treated with chemical treatment by using three different potassium salts. The ion exchange treatment was done by using salt paste method at two different treatment temperature, 425 ºC and 465 ºC. The glass’s mechanical, physical and structural properties were determined by using 3-point bending, density test and FTIR spectroscopy. The result has shown that glass’s flexural strength increases after ion exchange treatment for all different potassium salt. Meanwhile, ion ex- change treatment at high temperature results in reducing the glass’s flexural strength. All glass samples show slightly increase in density value compared with the untreated soda lime silica glass. The infrared spectra resulted in lowering the wavenumber of all treated glass samples at two different peaks 960 cm−1 and peak 768 cm−1 as the value of potassium ion increased.
