The Malaysian construction industry, a vital contributor to the nation’s economic growth, has seen substantial development with an average annual growth rate. However, safety concerns have arisen, with reports attributing issues to a language barrier among foreign workers. The diverse nationalities and cultures on construction sites pose challenges in communication, impacting project success. Addressing this, this paper investigated the impact of language barriers on foreign workers, and contractors implemented measures to mitigate these barriers and ensure project success. Employing a quantitative approach, a questionnaire was administered to local and foreign workers at construction sites, and data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and mean score. Results reveal that communication challenges significantly affect construction pillars: time, cost, quality, and safety. Local workers adhere to more modern safety standards and possess greater safety knowledge than their foreign counterparts. Despite this, contractors are conscious of risks and take precautions to minimize them. This paper emphasizes the need for enhancing foreign workers’ understanding and knowledge of current safety procedures in the construction industry in Selangor, compared to their local counterparts.
