The belief of an inauspicious intercalary eighth month originated during Tianli Sect (Heavenly Principles) Uprising in the Jiaqing Era of the Qing Dynasty. In the sixteenth year of the Jiaqing Era, followers of the Tianli Sect, influenced by the prophecies in their treasure book such as “the eighth month’s Mid-Autumn Festival or the Mid-Autumn Festival in the eighth month” selected the intercalary eighth month of the eighteenth year of the Jiaqing Era as the timing for their uprising based on The Book of Eternal Years.
