Engine Performance Testing Using Hydrous Bioethanol Fuel Blend to an SI Engine with Retrofitted Fuel System
摘要
The high cost of fossil fuel is still a big concern despite the emerging use of Electric Vehicles (EVs). Not all can afford EVs and the use of fossil fuels for transport is still a must to be addressed. Alternatives to hasten the impact of high fuel costs include the use of bioethanol blends but hard-starting issues are one of the challenges identified in addition to its performance as this paper verified. In this study, a 50 cc, 2-stroke gasoline (SI) engine was assembled into a test vehicle to run on a stock carburetor or on a retrofitted fuel-injected (FI) fuel system using commercial E10 and hydrous fuel blends. No adjustments were made to the fuel system’s optimum setting, and no loss of compression on the engine cylinder was ensured. Results show that fuel blends work well using E10, E20H, and E30H denoting “H” as 95% hydrous bioethanol with 29% better mileage performance using E20H on FI compared to carb fuel system. FI system is better compared to carbureted fuel system as it did not experience hard-starting problems up to E30H. In addition to phase separation, the decreasing power input due to the decreasing heating value when the hydrous blend is increased was observed to be contributory on the hard-starting issues due to the decreased energy supplied to crank the engine with an observed decreasing mechanical efficiency from 63% to 25.2% on carb, and 47.5% to 30.5% on FI when blend was increased from E10 to E30H.
