Sustainable Electroprecipitation of Metals: A Review

The removal of heavy metals from the wastewater is crucial as heavy metals are major wastewater pollutants that are not biodegradable which can cause environmental pollution and toxic effects on human health. Electroprecipitation is one of the electrochemical systems technologies that have gathered significant attention in treating heavy metals due to their advantages, such as high pollutant removal efficiencies, insensitivity to toxic compounds, and reduced formation of secondary waste generation. This paper reviews recent electroprecipitation technologies and how they treat common heavy metals in industrial wastewater such as nickel, chromium, and zinc. In particular, this review provides the analysis of electroprecipitation working mechanism, electroprecipitation reactor, and investigates the removal of heavy metals by electroprecipitation from industrial wastewater in the recent years. This review offers insightful information on electroprecipitation technology that will greatly advance the removal of heavy metals from wastewater in the future.
