Learning management systems (LMSs) play a crucial role in facilitating the tasks of educators in the management and administration of classes. Nevertheless, many teaching staff still do not have access to an LMS for various reasons, including several linked to hosting purposes. Cloud hosting an LMS presents challenges, including latency, high costs, data privacy concerns, and limited functionality. Educators often struggle to evaluate LMS benefits due to a lack of access and may be deterred by technical setup complexities. These issues highlight the need for alternative LMS deployment strategies that address cloud computing drawbacks while maintaining educational effectiveness. To address these challenges, recent studies have shown that running an LMS from a microserver such as the Raspberry Pi hardware is now possible, supporting multiple students simultaneously. Consequently, this work investigates the feasibility of home-hosting an LMS as a viable alternative in two distinct ways. In one method, the microserver’s performance for hosting an LMS at home was evaluated under laboratory conditions by simulating an Internet Service Provider's bandwidth values. In the second approach, a home-hosted LMS was operated in a production environment for four years, servicing more than 420 students. In this paper, we dive into the system as a case study, collecting statistics to justify evidence that the system has operated purposefully. In conclusion, this paper demonstrates the viability of a home-hosted LMS solution as an alternative to traditional centralized systems. It offers insights into this approach's practical implementation, performance, and potential benefits for more accessible and customisable e-learning solutions in various educational contexts.
