Cutting-Edge Techniques in Underwater Image Enhancement and Restoration

Underwater images are generally had many problems that lead to several quality degradations for various reasons, such as low contrast, low illumination, and color deviations. To enhance and restore underwater images, several image processing, visualization, and computer vision techniques have been proposed by various researchers. This article focuses and discusses the various recently developed techniques for underwater image enhancement and restoration with underwater scenario, datasets, and performance metrics in detail. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of various underwater image techniques and their limitations. Here, we also discuss the detailed evaluation techniques and analyses conducted under different set of underwater scenario conditions. Finally, the paper is concluded by explaining its potential challenges, problems, and open-ended issues which provide possible research directions.
