Computer-Mediated Intercultural Communication: A Collaborative Online International Learning Approach
摘要
The advent of technology is widely recognized for its ability to facilitate communication; however, the intricacies of computer-mediated intercultural communication remain relatively unexplored. This paper reviews the existing literature and examines the potential of technology to enhance communication among students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Cultural exchange is a vital aspect of intercultural communication, and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) can help bridge cultural divides by fostering interactions among students across geographical and cultural boundaries in a digital environment. Real-time cross-cultural communication potentially affords their awareness of other cultures, improving sympathy with cultural differences and reducing cultural shock and apprehension. A questionable problem may lie in the features of communication for developing intercultural values, empowered by the configurations of the digital setting and characterized by shared values. Future technological advances may enhance more nuanced understanding of global diversity, highlighting the role of technology in intercultural communication.
