The Joy of Aging
摘要
This chapter illuminates the spirit of positive aging reflected in a wealth of personal writings from the Qing period. Men and women did not merely lament the passage of time; they embraced happiness in their later years, highlighting the joys of family, leisure, and various activities and gatherings. Many expressed gratitude for their capable bodies and the opportunity to continue their lifelong pursuits of reading and writing. Elders shared their immense joy in witnessing more than one generation of their descendants. They took pride in becoming grandparents and great-grandparents, recounting their joyful experiences of teaching and playing with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many felt thrilled to receive care from younger generations. Some elderly writers reminisced about participating in special gatherings with peers and engaging in social activities, including government-hosted feasts honoring elderly officials. Others celebrated milestones such as their diamond wedding anniversaries and participated in official reunions commemorating the 60th anniversary of their “graduation” from the civil examinations at both the provincial and metropolitan levels. This chapter encapsulates the joyful emotions of the elders who recognized the wisdom, experience, and accomplishments they gained throughout their journey of aging.
