Low-Cost Computing Devices: Advantages and Disadvantages in Online Classes

In this article, we evaluate the performance of two low-cost devices—smartphones and Raspberry Pi—and highlight their pros and cons from a student’s perspective. We draw on Vigotsky’s ideas about the importance of devices in the relationship between humans and reality, as they enable us in the learning process to understand the world and think about actions to solve problems, as well as propose activities that contribute to improving the environment in which we live. We also base our work on studies on digital technologies in education and equitable education. The research is qualitative and part of an exploratory case study that aims to expand digital inclusion in a college environment. We look at technical and pedagogical aspects related to access to low-cost devices and student performance in the learning process. The data analysis has shown that—despite some reported problems and although none of the subjects perceived the experience of learning with the Raspberry Pi or smartphone as positive as that of a traditional computer system (notebook or desktop)—low-cost computer systems enable them to be included in online courses.
