Functional Theory
摘要
Leading architects, such as Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown have asked for a much broader concept of function than that of the Modernists as presented by CIAM and the Bauhaus architects. Buildings based on that model have proven to be not functional enough. A richer model of function based on the theory of human motivations as presented by Abraham Maslow provides the structure for such a theory. It has particular application in the development of building programs—statements of the ends that designs are to meet. The model of function presented by Walter Moleski and the author in Functionalism Revisited (2010) explicitly recognizes the importance of the symbolic function of architecture.
