Hypothyroidism
摘要
Hypothyroidism has been traditionally defined in older textbooks as a diminished effect and/or response of thyroid hormones on organs and tissues [1]. This is understandable, given the many steps in the pathway finally leading to the cellular actions of thyroid hormones. In turn, this influences a plethora of energetic and metabolic reactions in the human body [2, 3]. Depending on the severity of the hormone deficit the condition of hypothyroidism depicts a broad disease spectrum. The manifestation of the clinical disease comes with a multitude of more or less characteristic signs and symptoms, caused and accompanied by the development of the biochemical abnormalities [4–6].
