Foam cells are the hallmark cells that characterize atherosclerosis and play a central role in the entire process from the development of the initial (or precursor) lesion of fatty streaks to the rupture of the atheromas, including cholesterol homeostasis, inflammatory response, lipid core formation, cell proliferation, cell death, and thrombosis. Therefore, to elucidate the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, particularly how atherosclerosis develops and progresses, in other words, to clarify the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and its clinical significance, it has been an essential and important task to identify the origin of foam cells, that is, what cells they are derived from.
