It has long been believed that once the central nervous system (CNS) gets injured, the induced neurologic impairment cannot recover due to the lack of regeneracy potential of neurocytes. However, converging evidence has illustrated that CNS is highly plastic. CNS plasticity pertains to the ability of active adaption through change in structure and function of the CNS tissue to disease or environmental change. Neural function can recover to different extents following CNS damage through functional compensation or redistribution. This adaptation process is defined as brain plasticity.
