Augustine’s anti-theatricalism is legendary. In books like City of God and Confessions Augustine responds against a social reality he is witnessing in the second half of the fourth century A.D. in places like Thagaste (current Algeria) and Carthage—the reality of an actually existing theatrical culture. Theatres were physical places and performances were regular events in these places.
