Introduction: An Impolitical Point of Departure

A symptom can very simply be categorized as a sign. But unlike a sign which more often than not has a definite referent, a common symptom (like fever) may lead to a number of possible diagnoses as well as different lines of prognosis. A symptom is therefore a kind of sign which carries an uncertainty which the diagnosis has to finally put to rest opening up the possibility of prognosis and treatment.
