In-Situ Dielectric Sensor for Soil Pollution Detection and Sustainable Development

In-Situ Dielectric Sensor (ISDS) is composed of a plate probe and cone penetration rod. This paper proposes the ISDP as a field measurement tool for characterizing the physical properties of soil materials based on their dielectric constant across a frequency range of 100 kHz to 1000 kHz. The ISDP was designed as a surface probe, using in-situ probes such as a plate probe and a cone penetration rod, to measure the electromagnetic properties of soil materials at varying moisture contents, soil textures, densities, and contaminant levels, including leachate, lead, and diesel. Based upon the measured electromagnetic properties, we determine the soil pollution by leachate, heavy metals and hydrocarbons as quantitative and qualitative. The dielectric properties of soil show that different soil pollution have different effects. This promotes the use of these sensors to determine the type of pollution. Furthermore, the dielectric properties of soil using the proposed sensors can quantify the level of pollution in soil material. The major factor affecting dielectric properties of soil is the soil moisture content. Therefore, the dielectric sensor can be used to estimate soil moisture content accurately. This will benefit many engineering fields like civil and agricultural engineering.
