The ventral rami of the second, third, and fourth cervical spinal nerves supply the cutaneous branches: the lesser occipital nerve (C2), the great auricular nerves (C2, 3), the transverse cervical nerves (C2, 3), and the supraclavicular nerves (C3, 4), via the cervical plexus. The cervical plexus consists of two types of branches: cutaneous and muscular. The muscular branches include the ansa cervicalis, the phrenic nerve, and segmental branches. The cutaneous branches emerge at the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
