Climate change presents profound challenges to agricultural systems, significantly impacting food and nutrition security, particularly in vulnerable regions like the Northeastern Hill (NEH) Region of India, where agriculture is mainly rainfed with high dependence on monsoon precipitation. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of the climate change impact on agroecosystems affecting food and nutrition security, with a focus on the hilly and mountainous region of Northeast India. The NEH region is witnessing climate change with rising temperatures (0.2–1.2 °C per decade), erratic rainfall patterns (doubling of the coefficient of variation in recent times compared to the 1950–1980s), including fluctuations in the number of rainy days and periods, frequent occurrences of seasonal drought, and monsoon delays affecting the timely operation of agricultural practices in the region. These climatic variations have profound implications for agricultural productivity and sustainability, inducing shifts in crop cycles with changes in traditional cropping patterns, land use patterns, changes in crop suitability, and also the incidence of biotic and abiotic stresses in the region. Farmers in the NEH are increasingly facing challenges such as changes in the timing of sowing and harvesting of crops, leading to a mismatch of crop growth periods with the changing climate, increased input requirements for producing optimum yields, impacting food availability, and, moreover, the quality of food grains. Such changes are likely to seriously affect the socioeconomic condition of the farming community and pose risks to the overall nutritional security of the population, as staple crops and traditional diets may be compromised. In response to these challenges, the chapter calls for concerted efforts from stakeholders to prioritize and implement climate-resilient agricultural practices by integrating traditional knowledge with modern agricultural practices in order to ensure sustainable food and nutrition security in the northeastern hill region of India under the ongoing climate crisis.
