We discuss the perspectives and insights which science fiction can provide on robots in education and society. We discuss the value of empathy in fictional robot media that overlaps with educational settings. We use several fictions about robots in order to explore their possibilities as teaching tools. Fictional robots can be used to inspire interest in and teach the subject of engineering and computer science, and the ways in which robots might affect society; but robots also provide a unique opportunity to explore subjects such as empathy and societal othering.
