This chapter introduces non-market valuation methods for sustainable agriculture and reviews previous research. First, the value of sustainable agriculture is categorized into use value and non-use value. Second, we show the estimation methods to analyze the economic value of sustainable agriculture. To evaluate the value of sustainable agriculture, it is necessary to use the non-market valuation methods, which estimate the monetary value of the environment resources without market prices. This chapter considers the applicability of the non-market valuation methods to sustainable agriculture and identifies its limitations. Third, we review the valuation studies in Japan and overseas and show recent research trends. In Japan there are many studies on the evaluation of the multifunctionality of agriculture and rural areas, and in recent years there have been increasing studies focusing on food choices. On the other hand, overseas, there are many studies evaluating the impact of agricultural pollution on the environment and the effects of agricultural policies, with the focus different from that in Japan. Finally, we will discuss future research issues.
