Introduction: Linguistic Background and Theoretical Framework
摘要
This monograph is a Systemic-Functional Grammar (SFG) account of certain aspects of transitivity in Mandarin Chinese. It explores two major types of clauses in the language, which are usually referred to in SFG as material and relational (Halliday, An introduction to functional grammar, Edward Arnold, London, 1985)/1994), (Fawcett, Cognitive linguistics and social interaction: towards an integrated model of a systemic functional grammar and the other components of a communicating mind, Julius Groos, Heidelberg, 1980;Fawcett, Halliday and Fawcett (eds), New developments in systemic linguistics, Volume 1: theory and description, Frances Pinter, London, 1987), etc.). Material clauses refer to processes in the material world, including states (e.g. Lisi zuo zhe ‘Lisi is sitting’), happenings (e.g. Lisi shuai dao le ‘Lisi fell down’), actions (e.g. Lisi da zhong le qiu ‘Lisi hit the ball’), events (e.g. xia yu le ‘It rained’) and so on.
