Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Predictive Short and Long Non-coding RNA Biomarkers in Cancer

Cancer research has historically focused on investigating genetic modifications and sequence variations in protein-coding genes, along with their consequent effects on cellular biological behavior. The growing comprehension of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) has revised our view of the genomic landscape and its contribution to disease etiology, particularly in cancer. Non-coding RNAs were formerly characterized as “junk” within the genetic apparatus. Non-coding RNAs encompass microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs. We examine the influence of ncRNAs on gene expression in malignant cells, cancer dissemination, and metastasis. The article elucidates the intricate mechanisms by which ncRNAs influence oncogenesis, tumor suppression, and treatment resistance. It also evaluates the potential clinical applications of ncRNAs, particularly their role in cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Subsequently, it was revealed that ncRNAs are regarded as essential contributors to cancer biology, presenting novel prospects for cancer detection and prognosis. This chapter discusses the intricate domain of ncRNAs in cancer biology, emphasizing their prospective application as biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. Furthermore, their capacity for individualized cancer treatment is demonstrated. In conclusion, comprehending the function of ncRNA is clinically significant for carcinogenesis, cancer detection, and tailored therapy.
