Soil Actinomycetes with a Perspective of Cellulolytic Activity

This chapter explores the potential of soil actinomycetes to provide insights into the bioconversion of cellulosic waste into valuable by-products. Actinomycetes are primarily found in soil, where they represent more than 30% of the entire microbial population. To survive in this environment, actinomycetes developed complex systems for utilizing organic materials by producing enzymes to use soil components and get sustenance. The study provides a detailed characterization of cellulases producing soil actinomycetes, and the characterization of cellulase enzymes, including their optimal pH, temperature, and substrate specificity. Key findings indicate that the degradation of cellulosic waste is a critical environmental and economic challenge, necessitating efficient and eco-friendly solutions and soil actinomycetes have emerged as promising candidates for this purpose due to their robust cellulase-producing capabilities. Moreover, it discusses the scalability of using these actinomycetes at the industrial level. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the gene present in the actinomycetes responsible for the production of cellulase enzymes and positioning soil actinomycetes as a sustainable solution for industrial waste management. Future research directions include exploring metabolic pathways involved in cellulase production to enhance enzyme yields and stability.
