In the last couple of decades, there has been an increase in the number of female domestic workers, locally referred to as “al-khadam” employed in households in Qatar. This is partly due to the economic growth and rising household incomes because of which families are able to hire migrant females to help them in domestic tasks. In this chapter, we examine how the presence of these workers impacts household labor division and assess how they enable and challenge traditional family settings. Rather than perpetuating a one-dimensional narrative of domestic workers as mere “victims of exploitation”, in this chapter, we situate their experiences within a framework that acknowledges their agency and their vital, though often overlooked, role in shaping Qatari society. Our objective in this chapter is to offer a context-sensitive understanding of how domestic work mediates intersections of gender, class, and cultural norms in Qatar.
