The Hidden Face of Domestic Violence: Economic Abuse of Women and Its Impact on Family
摘要
This chapter discusses the economic abuse of women in the Qatari context as a form of domestic violence that has not received adequate attention from scholars. The overall aim of the chapter is to unfold this hidden form of domestic violence and elaborate its impacts on women and their families. This research reports that Qatari women experience economic abuse during marriage and upon separation or divorce. This abuse takes many forms, including forcing the wife to make excessive financial contributions to the household, maintaining financial ties with the husband, controlling the wife's inheritance, demanding payment of the husband’s debts, and squandering household income on unnecessary expenses or projects. Following a divorce, economic abuse continues through arrangements related to residency and financial responsibilities for childcare.
