After over two years of work at Howe’s, I’ve developed competences in some knowledge domains, and with them, I’ve completed projects on my own, with little to no input from Jim or my coworkers. That is, I’ve developed sufficient competence in some domains to analyze a project, to plan its steps, and to carry out those steps. But as Dreyfus and Dreyfus wrote, “The competent performer judges by means of conscious deliberation.” In this chapter, I first discuss the sometimes-agonized conscious deliberation I go through as I move through a project’s steps. Discussing examples along the way, I discuss how, as I’ve developed competences, I’ve improved the quality of my projects while more often completing projects independently—or nearly independently. While I still make mistakes, I’m able to make decisions based on context, as effectively demonstrated in the realm of portables—those projects in different sites around Ames. Indeed, the chapter ends by discussing the progression of my learning in unpredictable worksites outside the walls of the shop.
