System Approaches for Enhancing Soil Health and Food Security

Maintaining agricultural production, environmental sustainability, and human health worldwide all depend on healthy soil, which is the cornerstone of sustainable agro-ecosystems. A thorough knowledge of soil health is necessary because anthropogenic activities, such as intensive land use and farming techniques, have a major influence on the soil processes. In the past, non-biological characteristics like nutrients and soil structure were the main emphasis of soil health evaluations. Nonetheless, it is now acknowledged that soil microbes play a very critical role in preserving soil health. Given the complexity of agricultural systems and the need to accomplish numerous objectives, systems approaches and multidisciplinary assessments are necessary. Understanding the complete agronomic production system requires the use of systems techniques, which have been more popular in recent decades. These methods use scientific models and information from knowledgeable stakeholders to consider the temporal and geographical aspects of agronomic systems. With examples given in this work, the choice of suitable approaches, ranging from basic to sophisticated, is contingent upon particular study requirements. In order to improve research and implementation, systems methods are increasingly including stakeholders, such as farmers, residents, and policymakers. Developing creative, sustainable agro-ecosystems requires a thorough multidisciplinary examination, with soil health being a critical element for both ecosystem sustainability and future food security. This comprehensive strategy aids in the creation of laws and procedures that protect the world’s food systems and maintain healthy soils.
